No More Store Bought Veggie Burgers For Me

Here is a picture of my first batch of homemade veggie burgers.  (that is a small bun that it is on, just so you know I don't make monster size burgers!)  I took a recipe that I found and modified it.  I made a double batch so I would have extras to freeze.  This ended up making 12 burgers, and they are delicious!

Veggie Burger

2/3 cup oatmeal
2 cans black beans, drained and rinsed
4 Tbs soy sauce
1 cup ground flax seed
about 2 Tbs minced onion
1 large finely grated carrot
salt and pepper to taste

Put the oatmeal in a bowl and add 1 1/3 cup boiling water.  Set aside.
Mash the beans in a large bowl.  Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well.  Add the oatmeal and thoroughly mix in.  Use a 1/4 measuring cup to drop burger mixture onto a hot griddle or skillet, sprayed with cooking spray.   Cook a few minutes on each side.

  1. thanks, i am going to try this recipe soon! we have all the stuff right now in the house. veggie burgers are expensive to buy, so if this comes out well, i'll be saving some money! good-bye gardenburger and bye-bye boca burger! i might add some mushrooms. they add a nice "beefy" texture to vegetarian dishes (excellent in chili, and portobellos on the grill are succulent "vegetarian steaks"!)and they also add moisture so the patties don't get dry. let you know how it goes!

  2. Just keep in mind that it makes 12 burgers. You might want to do 1/2 batch first. I am looking forward to seeing how they are heated up from frozen. Definitely let me know how they are with some shrooms in them - sounds delicious!
